Breaking the silence on erectile dysfunction: new research reveals concerning stats for Aussie men aged 40+

New research released today is aiming to shatter the silence surrounding a life-disrupting condition affecting 1 in 3 Australian men over the age of 40.

While often viewed as a private struggle, erectile dysfunction or ED, is much more than an individual concern. It’s a significant health issue that compromises the confidence and mental health and wellbeing of those affected, as well as their relationships.

According to the new research, 32% of Australian men aged 40+ are dealing with the challenges of ED.

Importantly, ED is not an isolated issue, but is often linked to serious, underlying health conditions, including:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease.

According to Professor Helen O’Connell AO, President of the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ), Melbourne, given ED is often linked to an underlying medical condition, it is important for men to seek treatment.

“Recognising early signs of ED is critical. ED symptoms can often present as the first sign of metabolic diseases, cardiovascular disease (disorders of the heart and blood vessels), high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.

“Eighty per cent of ED cases occur due to compromised blood vessels,” said Prof O’Connell.

“ED is also a common complication of prostate cancer, and its treatment. For some men, it can take up to two years or longer post-treatment to regain sexual function.”

ED is a possible side effect of prostate cancer treatment that affects up to 75% of those treated.

Delaying treatment can make the condition worse, and lead to mental health challenges such as depression and anxiety. Addressing the issue early is crucial for restoring both intimacy and safeguarding a man’s overall health and wellbeing.

Recognising the signs of ED is essential for prompt intervention.

Some common symptoms include:

  • ⚡ Difficulty maintaining an erection
  • ⚡ Reduced sexual confidence
  • ⚡ Emotional stress or strain on relationships.

Ken, 70, PCaHELP Founder and Chair, Perth, developed ED after surviving prostate cancer.

“When I learned I would never regain sexual function, I was shattered. I thought my life was over and was very concerned about my future.

“However, the biggest challenge of living with ED was mental. Despite surviving prostate cancer, developing ED following prostate cancer treatment, was totally devastating,” Ken said.

“Help is available. All you have to do is ask. There are many brilliant doctors and various treatment options out there,” said Ken.

By taking action early, men can tackle the physical symptoms and also prevent the heavy toll of ED on their mental health. ED often serves as an early warning sign of more serious health concerns, making it vital to seek help at the earliest signs. Early intervention can restore intimacy, helping men maintain a high quality of life.

If you, or someone you care about is experiencing symptoms of ED:

  • Recognise the signs — ED is frequently tied to broader health issues, so it’s important to acknowledge it as a symptom rather than just a standalone problem;
  • Seek professional advice — A GP can offer solutions, refer you to specialists, and guide you through treatment options; and
  • Encourage open dialogue — Breaking the stigma surrounding ED is a critical first step toward improving health outcomes and supporting those affected.

We need to work together to normalise the conversation about ED. Only then can Aussie men access the treatment, care, and support they need to live healthier, happier lives.
