The Simple Breast Cancer Detection That is Going Viral #KnowYourLemons

A photo of disfigured lemons has been passed on rapidly through social media. The idea behind this viral photo is to raise awareness for breast cancer by using a simple visual aid to help women spot a tumour earlier.

The “Know Your Lemons” campaign was founded by a young designer, Corrine Ellsworth Beaumont and her Worldwide Breast Cancer organisation. Corrine lost both her grandmothers to breast cancer at the ages of 40 and 62. The lack of information for early detection of breast cancer motivated her to come up with a solution.

She highlights that most patients are reluctant to talk about breasts or look at them. Hence this prompted her to use lemons as a stand-in metaphor for breasts. Corrine describes the egg box of lemons as a playful, less intimidating image which might help women overcome their fear of the disease.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation suggests performing a self-exam once a month. Early detection is crucial for any necessary treatment. A simple breast check while in the shower or in front of a mirror with the aid of the #KnowYourLemons photo could save you or a loved one’s life.
