Today is January 26, which means it’s Australia Day! Yay! Given it’s a Saturday, many will be glad to carry the celebration through to Monday, thanks to the nationally recognised holiday. For some, the long weekend provides the perfect excuse to have a couple of drinks and celebrate with a traditional Australian barbecue with family and friends.
While this sounds like an awesome fun thing to do, it’s important to not go too crazy!
Here are some simple things you can do this long weekend to maintain your health:
Spend quality time with friends and family
Make the most of the opportunity to get together with your loved ones, because as we all know, this can get a bit tricky once the year ramps into full gear. Head outdoors for a barbecue or picnic and enjoy the stunning weather while it lasts!
Head to the park or beach
Consider some outdoor activities like cricket, football or soccer, and if it’s warm, why not head to the beach for a swim? Use the extra day off to get active and burn some energy.
Eat your fruit and veg
If you know there’ll be lots of opportunities to overconsume, reach for fresh fruit and vegetables before the fattier options. The additional fibre will be healthy for your gut, and might help to fill you up and keep you from overeating on the unhealthier options.
Drink wise
Choose healthy ways to hydrate yourself like with plain water and water infused with berries or lemon. Stay away from sugary soft drinks and ideally alcohol too! If that’s too much to ask, opt for beverages low in sugar.
